Banana leaves instead of Plastic wraps
I came across this story where a supermarket in Bali is using banana leaves and bamboo straps to wrap vegetables instead of using plastic. We have been using banana leaves to wrap food here in Kerala and this was a system for generations. However, this practice has faded away in today’s modern world and we see the use of plastics for wrapping vegetables mainly in supermarkets.
Bintang Supermarket, one of the largest supermarkets in Bali does not provide plastic wraps. Instead of plastic wraps and plastic tape, some vegetables in the vegetable rack are wrapped in banana leaves and bamboo straps.
Considering the fact that it takes from 50 to 200 years for plastic wraps to fully break down, it’s an influential step that has been taken by this supermarket.
It’s a pleasing view for customers who visit the supermarket. The banana leaves make the packaging look fresher.
This solution is something that we could implement in Kerala as we do not have scarcity of Banana leaves even in Ernakulam city. The banana leaves can also bring in a design aspect which is sure to be welcomed by all.
